søs — Danish for sister.

søs is the shared project of Carina and Chris Gascoine: a sister and brother raised in Britain to a Danish mother, writing spare, cinematic music in the northern tradition of Einaudi and Ólafur Arnalds.

Between them they have spent their lives in classical music — conservatoire training, concert halls, festival stages and recording studios — and søs is where those two paths finally meet. The name is a nod to their Nordic line and to the bond at the centre of the work: two players who learned music side by side, now writing it together.

Carina

Carina trained as a flautist at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, graduating with a BMus (Hons), and is also a pianist and violinist. She has performed at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe and, in Bermuda, shared a stage with the flute virtuoso Sir James Galway. Hers is the melodic, breath-led voice at the heart of the søs sound.

Chris

Chris is a cellist and one third of Ember Trio, widely described as Europe’s most successful classical-crossover act. Their reimaginings of contemporary music have drawn more than 300 million views and taken them from the Barbican, the Saatchi Gallery, the National Gallery, Westminster Abbey and the Tower of London to stages across Europe, the Gulf, India, Singapore and the United States. Beyond Ember, his work spans the Imaginary Orchestra and Passing Clouds, with sessions recorded at Platoon Studios.

With søs, Carina and Chris turn inward — away from the crossover stage and toward something quieter and more personal. Drawing on their Scandinavian roots and years of playing together, they are writing a first collection of modern-classical recordings: piano, strings, and open space. First releases arrive soon.
